[Breaking News] Banlist for Vanguard Comes into Existence

As many of you have heard, a banlist has come into existence for vanguard, following the overwhelming dominance of select clans in the major tournaments over the last year. In the last major tournament in the Japanese meta, over 3/4 of decks taking part consisted of Majesty Lord Blaster, Dragonic Overlord the End, and Goddess of the Full Moon Tsukiyomi. The following statement was released by Bushiroad after this event.

On 10th December 2012, it was announced for the Japanese version of Cardfight!! Vanguard that the following restriction on cards will take place:

**As the situation is different for the Japanese and English versions, there are currently no plans to implement the following restriction for the English version of Cardfight!! Vanguard at all!**

———-

With effect from the 1st of January 2013, for the Japanese version of Cardfight!! Vanguard, the cards highlighted in the following list will be restricted to up to a total of two cards in the deck (including the first vanguard).

King of Knights, Alfred
Majesty Lord Blaster
Wingal Brave

Lizard Soldier, Conroe
Dragonic Overlord the End

Silent Tom
Godhawk, Ichibyoshi
Goddess of the Full Moon, Tsukuyomi

*This includes all cards of the same name with different rarities.

[Example]
OK: King of Knights, Alfred x 2
OK: Majesty Lord Blaster x 1, Wingal Brave x 1
– Total of 2 in a deck, so it’s fine.

Not OK: Majesty Lord Blaster x 2, Wingal Brave x 1
Not OK: Dragonic Overlord the End x 2, Lizard Soldier, Conroe x 1

Once again, we would like to state that there are currently no plans to implement the following restriction for the English version of Cardfight!! Vanguard.

I’m going to start off by saying that I was expecting a banlist for a long time. No card game ever lasts without some sort of restrictions placed on the different cards that are played in order to provide some semblance of balance. Saying that however, lets get into how I feel about this particular list.

I find that these restrictions may be overly ambitious, and I believe that if they truly do desire balance, they have come forward with this list at quite possibly the worst time. With the release of set 9, many new, powerful cards have been released. With these cards comes new, powerful strategies that could quite possibly shape a meta, even if the decks affected by this list were left untouched. By attempting to push the meta in a direction that wasn’t dominated by 3 decks, we have instead shifted the meta towards 3 different decks, with Platinum Ezel taking the place of Majesty Lord, and Glory Maelstrom taking Dragonic Overlord the Ends place. Goddess of the Sun may take Tsukiyomi’s place, that remains to be seen, but I believe it is more likely that Soulless may come to fill the gap. Pretty much, I think that we will trade a meta dominated by three different clans, with 5 different builds (Alfred, Majesty, The End, Tsukiyomi, CoCo), for a meta dominated by… three different clans, with four different builds (Ezel, Maelstrom, Coco, Amaterasu).

Unfortunately, these changes will almost guaranteed come to the English Meta as well, as allowing a severe division such as having separate banlists wouldn’t be good for the game. However, this is Bushiroad’s first banlist, and as such, should be taken with a grain of salt. The changes will be monitored and changed based on community response, meta shifts, and other factors and the list could very easily change before becoming live in the English Meta. I hope to see some changes, lets see how this evolves.
